Last week we saw what the first year BA Historic Carving students had been up to in their home studios, this week it’s the turn of second year stone carvers, who have also been working with Kim Amis, this time on an intensive three week Torso modelling project.
Students began by making preparatory drawings in various styles, ranging from the early Egyptian dynasty to post-war Britain. Some of the artists used as inspiration were Auguste Rodin, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Aristide Maillol, Ernst Barlach, Camille Claudel, Constantin Brâncuși, Alberto Giacometti, Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore, Elisabeth Frink, and Giacomo Manzù.
With a ball of clay the size of a large orange, students each produced at least fourteen clay maquettes based on each of these styles. With a progressive increase in speed, the torsos were modelled while the pandemic went on around us. A parallel was drawn between clay torsos and Covid-19 torsos seen every day on the news, from exuberant youth to falling man.
